Genesys Works is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that enables inner-city high school students to break through barriers and discover through meaningful work experience that they can succeed as professionals in the corporate world. Students enter the Genesys Works program during the summer prior to their senior year and, after eight intensive weeks of training, are assigned to work at one of Genesys Works' client locations, part time, during their senior year. The training is designed to arm students with the knowledge they need to provide value to corporations in specific technical fields. Furthermore, students are trained on the professional skills needed (such as communications and corporate behavior) to enter and succeed in corporate environments.
Target wanted to play an active role in creating a talented and diverse future workforce in the Twin Cities community, where they are headquartered.
In 2011, Target partnered with Genesys Works: Twin Cities to provide internships to local high school seniors. Genesys Works interns gain valuable experience and skills while Target gains access to a diverse talent pool and current Target employees looking to advance to supervisory positions gain people management skills.
Target has provided almost 160 internships since the partnership began. In 2017 alone, 35 high school seniors were placed in Target internships, a few of which tackled projects – such as the Starbucks Challenge and the Swagger Challenge – inside Target’s innovative Dojo – a dedicated space in which subject matter experts take up residence for an extended time.
