Genesys Works is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that enables inner-city high school students to break through barriers and discover through meaningful work experience that they can succeed as professionals in the corporate world. Students enter the Genesys Works program during the summer prior to their senior year and, after eight intensive weeks of training, are assigned to work at one of Genesys Works' client locations, part time, during their senior year. The training is designed to arm students with the knowledge they need to provide value to corporations in specific technical fields. Furthermore, students are trained on the professional skills needed (such as communications and corporate behavior) to enter and succeed in corporate environments.
Although Kirkland is a large firm providing services in complex litigation, corporate and tax, intellectual property, restructuring, and counseling matters, they also recognize the incredible value of technology. It is important for them to keep pace with today’s technology by providing their lawyers, staff, and clients with the most advanced technology tools available to facilitate the practice of law. As such, it was a natural extension for Kirkland to partner with Genesys Works. For 7 years, Genesys Works high school interns have provided Kirkland & Ellis with support in their IT department.
Kirkland and Ellis partnered with Genesys Works, who has provided Kirkland and Ellis with high school interns to support their IT systems. Kirkland first placed interns at the firm’s Chicago office and eventually expanded to their offices in Houston, Bay Area, and recently the Washington, D.C., area.
The high school interns provided by Genesys Works learn about IT systems, hone their problem-solving and interpersonal skills, and gain valuable experience that they can take with them throughout their careers. The partnership also allows Kirkland and Ellis to fill a professional development need by placing interns with employees who are seeking to sharpen their leadership and coaching skills by serving as trainers and mentors to interns.
